What is Intellectual Property (IP)?
Intellectual property (IP) refers to any creation of the mind that the law protects from unauthorized use by others. Such creations include inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. The ownership of intellectual property creates a limited or perpetual monopoly in the protected property, depending on the type of creation. Intellectual property may be protected by patent, copyright, trademark, or as a trade secret.
Patents protect inventions. Trademarks protect brands and source identifiers. Copyrights protect the expression of an idea fixed in a tangible medium. Trade secret rights protect information that has business value and is not publicly known. Contracts are entered into between at least two parties and define the right and obligations of the parties.
